Dr. Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje was awarded the Alan Merriam Prize at the 2009 meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) in Mexico City for her book, Fiddling in West Africa: Touching the Spirit in Fulbe, Hausa, and Dagbamba Cultures, Indiana University Press, 2008. The purpose of the Alan Merriam Prize is to recognize the most distinguished, published English-language monograph in the field of ethnomusicology. This award is given annually to a book published in the previous two years.

Barbara Morrison's Jazz & Blues Birthday Party honoring all Los Angeles musicians turning 60, took place on Saturday, September 12 at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles. Special guests were Gerald Wilson, Bill Henderson, James Moody, and Tierney Sutton. There were numerous other guest performers.

Anthony Seeger was elected Vice President of the Brazilian Association for Ethnomusicology (ABET—Associação Brasileira de Etnomusicologia) at its November 2008 meeting in Maceio, Brazil.  He also briefly visited the Suyá village, where he was twice clubbed to death during a Suyá video shoot of an enactment of a myth. Barbara Morrison performed at the Governor's Ball, the celebration following the 81st Academy Awards, on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Morrison performed with The Impulse Orchestra, a 21-piece ensemble, with jazz trumpeter Rick Braun and saxophonist Richard Elliot, for the Ball’s 1,500 guests, which included Oscar winners and nominees, show presenters, performers and other luminaries.

Tzvetanka Varimezova is a member of the group, Kitka: Women's Vocal Ensemble, whose CD, "Sanctuary: A Cathedral Concert" [Diaphonica] was "one of 36," selected out of 3,000 entries for a Grammy Award in the "Best Traditional World Music" category. (The category ultimately had four nominees.) For information on this recording go to Sanctuary. For information on the "Best Traditional World Music" category, click Grammy Awards and go to Field 16, Category 74. The 51st Grammy Awards will take place on February 8, 2009.

Steve Loza curated an exhibit, "100 Years of Mexican Music," a photographic exhibit reflecting Mexico's musical creativity across a century. The exhibit is presented by The Latino Music of History, Art and Culture. The opening reception took place on Saturday, January 24, 2009.

One of his artists from James Roberson's record label, JDI records, Beverly Crawford, won an award at the 24th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards program, which took place in Nashville on Saturday, January 17, 2009.  In addition to winning the Stellar, Beverly was also chosen to sing at the Inaugural Prayer Breakfast on Monday, January 19 in Washington DC.

Timothy Taylor's article, "The Commodification of Music at the Dawn of the Era of 'Mechanical Music,'" published in the journal Ethnomusicology last year, was awarded the Jaap Kunst Prize by the Society of Ethnomusicology at its annual meeting in October, 2008. The Society's description of this prize reads that it is "to recognize the most significant article in ethnomusicology written by a member of the Society for Ethnomusicology and published within the previous year (whether in the journal or elsewhere)."

Nazir Jairazbhoy has been selected as one of the five recipients of the 2008 Dickson Emeritus Professor Award. Professor Jairazbhoy was a faculty member in ethnomusicology at UCLA from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. He is one of the major persons responsible for the establishment of the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology and became the first chair of the department. For more information, click here.
