The UCLA Contemporary Jazz Large Ensemble played a FREE show of original music on Sunday (February 17th) from 11-1PM at the West L.A. Farmers' Market, located only 5 minutes away from UCLA at Santa Monica and Corinth, just behind the Courthouse. www.myspace.com/uclacontemporaryjazzle

The UCLA Contemporary Jazz Large Ensemble has been praised by world-renowned keyboardist George Duke as a group of "young musicians who are willing and able to push the musical envelope." Formed in the Fall of 2006, the group is committed to the performance of new music by student and professional composers. Under the supervision of legendary guitarist Kenny Burrell, this student-led twenty-one-piece orchestra has premiered over twenty-three pieces of music by thirteen different composers, fifteen of which were original works composed for the ensemble.

Aurelia Shrenker and Eva Primack made their LA debut as the duo Æ with three shows at the Museum of Jurassic Technology, located on the web at www.mjt.org. shows were Friday January 11 at 8pm and Saturday January 12 at 8 and 10pm.

Æ (Aurelia Shrenker and Eva Primack) bring together a deep knowledge of different vocal traditions, making something daring and new out of each song they sing together. They have chosen the name Æ (the joined a and e, officially named "ash") because it represents something of a dual nature--not singular, not plural, but exactly two. They often sing a cappella but enjoy accompanying themselves on dulcimer, accordion, and Georgian panduri. Their renditions are rooted in folk culture yet daring and provocative--in their music, the exuberance of youth and the reverence of ancient tradition coincide. Æ perform intimate, soulful and stirring music from the mountains of Appalachia, Caucasus Georgia, Bulgaria... the polyphony of Albania, Greece, Ukraine, Corsica... and the heart-swelling songs of the Southeast European Roma.
